بی‌بی

The etymology of بی‌بی traces back to a Turkic and Central Asian honorific used across the Persianate world for noble or respected women. In Mughal India, the Bibi was a high-status woman of the household. In Qajar-era Iran, the title moved down the social register and softened into the family-level affection it has today. The arc of the word, from court honorific to grandma-on-the-couch, is itself a piece of Persian social history: an honorific democratized into the kitchen.
