What it means
فرانسه (Farânse) is the name Persians use for the country France. The word came into Persian from the French name “France” and has been used in Persian writing and speech for well over a century. The adjective form is فرانسوی (Farânsavi), meaning French, as in a French person or something made in France. A close contrast is اروپا (Orupâ), Europe, since France is often discussed as a leading European nation.
How to use it
- او در فرانسه زندگی میکند. (U dar Farânse zendegi mikonad.) “He lives in France.”
- زبان فرانسه یاد میگیرم. (Zabân-e Farânse yâd migiram.) “I am learning the French language.”

Cultural note
France has held a special place in Iranian intellectual life since at least the late nineteenth century, when many Iranian reformers and scholars studied in Paris. French-educated Iranians played a central role in the Constitutional Revolution of 1906. The French language also influenced modern Persian vocabulary heavily, particularly in the fields of science, arts, and fashion, and loanwords from French appear throughout everyday speech.
