What it means
بهترین (behtarin) means “the best.” It is the superlative form of به (beh, good), formed by adding ترین (tarin), the Persian superlative suffix, to the comparative بهتر. The suffix ترین is purely Persian and applies to any adjective: بزرگ becomes بزرگترین (biggest), کوچک becomes کوچکترین (smallest). Because the root به is an ancient Persian word with no Arabic in its makeup, بهترین is fully native. In everyday speech بهترین is often used as a standalone compliment: این بهترینه (in behterine, this is the best), and also in fixed phrases like بهترین دوستم (behtarin dustam, my best friend).
How to use it
- اون بهترین دوستمه. (un behtarin dustame.) “She is my best friend.”
- بهترین کار اینه که صادق باشی. (behtarin kâr ine ke sâdeq bâshi.) “The best thing to do is to be honest.”
- این بهترین غذایی بود که خوردم. (in behtarin ghazâyi bud ke khordam.) “This was the best food I have ever eaten.”
- بهترین راه رو انتخاب کردیم. (behtarin râh ro entekhâb kardim.) “We chose the best route.”
Cultural note
In Persian compliments, بهترین is used liberally and sincerely, not as hollow flattery. Saying بهترین معلمی که داشتم (behtarin mo’allemi ke dâshtam, the best teacher I ever had) is a serious statement of gratitude. The phrase بهترینها رو برات آرزو میکنم (behtarinh ro barat ârezu mikonam, I wish you the best) is a warm send-off used at graduations, farewells, and New Year messages. بهترین is also the word Iranians reach for when rating restaurants, films, or experiences on social media: simply بهترین! (behtarin!) as a one-word review means unmistakably that nothing else compares.
