What it means
سال نو (sal-e now) is a pure Persian phrase built from two native words: سال (sal, year) and نو (now, new). Together they simply mean “New Year,” but in everyday Iranian life the phrase is inseparable from Nowruz, the Persian New Year celebrated at the spring equinox around March 20th. The most common greeting using this phrase is سال نو مبارک (sal-e now mobarak), meaning “Happy New Year.” This greeting is equivalent in warmth and frequency to “Happy New Year” in English during the holiday season.
How to use it
- سال نو مبارک! (sal-e now mobarak!) “Happy New Year!”
- سال نو رو بهت تبریک میگم. (sal-e now ro behet tabrik migam.) “I congratulate you on the New Year.”
- امیدوارم سال نو بهتر از سال قبل باشه. (omidvaram sal-e now behtar az sal-e qabl bashe.) “I hope the New Year is better than last year.”
- سال نو با خانوادهام میگذرونم. (sal-e now ba khanevadeam migzarunam.) “I am spending the New Year with my family.”
Cultural note
Nowruz, the occasion most associated with سال نو, has been celebrated for at least 3,000 years and is recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity. The celebration spans 13 days and involves rituals such as setting a Haft Sin table, visiting relatives, and giving gifts of cash called eidi. Iranians in the diaspora across North America and Europe also mark the occasion, making سال نو مبارک a phrase heard around the world each March.
