What it means

بحث (bahs) is the Persian word for a discussion, a debate, an argument. It covers a wide range, from a calm conversation about a topic to a heated argument at a family dinner. The defining feature is exchange: two or more people, views going back and forth. A monologue is not a بحث. A lecture is not a بحث. A بحث requires participants who are actively pushing against each other’s positions.

The word does not, by itself, imply hostility. “بحث‌مون درباره فیلم بود” (bahsemun darbare-ye film bud, our discussion was about the film) is friendly. But Persian also uses بحث for arguments in the heated sense: “دیشب با مامانم بحثم شد” (dishab ba mamanam bahsam shod, last night I had an argument with my mom) means a real fight. Tone and context decide.

Bahs vs estedlal

This contrast is one of the most useful distinctions in formal Persian. بحث (bahs) is the social activity of arguing, the back-and-forth. استدلال (estedlal) is the underlying logical structure of one side’s argument. A بحث can be empty of استدلال (two people repeating their positions louder) or full of it (two people each offering chains of reasoning). Iranian intellectual culture prizes the second and dismisses the first as “بحث بی‌حاصل” (bahs-e bi-hasel, fruitless argument).

Where it comes from

Bahs is Arabic-origin, a verbal noun of the root b-h-th (ب ح ث) meaning to search, to investigate, to inquire. The original Arabic sense is closer to “investigation, inquiry,” and survives in formal Persian compounds like بحث علمی (bahs-e elmi, scholarly inquiry) and در بحث (dar bahs, in the inquiry, under discussion). Over centuries the everyday sense slid toward “discussion, debate, argument,” which is how Iranians use the word now. The investigatory sense lives on in academic contexts: a chapter of a book can be called یک بحث (yek bahs, a topic, an investigation).

In our voice

بحث is one of the most common Persian words you will hear in real conversation. “بیا بحث نکنیم” (biya bahs nakonim, let’s not argue), “این بحث رو ول کن” (in bahs-ro velkon, drop this argument), and “بحث سر چی بود؟” (bahs sar-e chi bud, what was the argument about?) are stock phrases. Learn the word early, use it freely, and pay attention to whether the speaker is talking about a friendly discussion or a real fight. Tone carries most of the signal.
