What it means
باغبانی (bâghbâni) is the activity of gardening: planting, watering, pruning, and caring for a garden. The word is built entirely from Persian roots. بَاغ (bâgh) means garden, the suffix بان (bân) denotes a keeper or guardian, and the final ی (i) forms an abstract noun. A باغبان (bâghbân) is therefore a gardener, and باغبانی is the craft or hobby of gardening. It contrasts with کشاورزی (keshâvarzi), which refers to farming on a larger, agricultural scale.
How to use it
- باغبانی یکی از سرگرمیهای آرامشبخش است. (bâghbâni yeki az sargarmi-hâ-ye ârâmesh-bakhsh ast.) “Gardening is one of the most relaxing hobbies.”
- هر روز صبح باغبانی میکنم. (har ruz sobh bâghbâni mi-konam.) “I do gardening every morning.”
- مادرم عاشق باغبانی است و گلهای زیادی دارد. (mâdaram âsheq-e bâghbâni ast o gol-hâ-ye ziâdi dârad.) “My mother loves gardening and has many flowers.”
- برای باغبانی تو آپارتمان هم میشه گلدون کاشت. (barâ-ye bâghbâni tu âpârtemân ham mishe goldun kâsht.) “For apartment gardening you can plant pots too.”
Cultural note
The garden holds a deep place in Persian culture. The word bâgh appears in ancient Persian royal gardens and in the classical concept of paradise, the walled garden known in Old Iranian as pairi-daeza. Today, home gardening is a popular weekend activity, and many Iranian households cultivate roses, herbs such as mint and fenugreek, and fruit trees in courtyards or on balconies. The Nowruz tradition of growing sabzeh (sprouted greens) connects gardening to seasonal celebration.
