What it means
گردشگری (gardeshgari) is the abstract noun form of گردشگر (gardeshgar), built by adding the suffix ـی to the base. It means tourism as an industry, activity, or sector. The word covers recreational travel, cultural visits, and the business infrastructure that supports travelers. Like gardeshgar, it is a Farhangestan term made from purely native Persian morphemes, with no Arabic, French, or English elements. A practical contrast: gardeshgar refers to the person who travels, while gardeshgari refers to the entire activity or industry.

Cultural note
Iran is home to 27 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Persepolis, Golestan Palace, and the historic city of Yazd, making gardeshgari a sector of real strategic importance in official planning. The word appears constantly in government five-year development plans, which set explicit targets for foreign visitor numbers and tourism revenue. Despite political and logistical barriers to international travel, domestic gardeshgari is extremely popular, with Iranians traveling extensively within their own country during Nowruz and other holidays.
