باغ

The Persian Garden (باغ ایرانی, bâgh-e irâni) is a UNESCO World Heritage architectural form, with nine sites listed across Iran (Kashan, Shiraz, Isfahan, Yazd, and others). The classic design is the چهارباغ (chahârbâgh, "four-garden"): a rectangle divided into four quadrants by water channels, with a pavilion at the center. The Old Persian word *paridaida (a walled enclosure) is the source of Greek paradeisos, which became Latin paradisus and English "paradise." When you say باغ in Persian you are reaching back through that whole chain. Bâgh-e Fin in Kashan is the most cited example: 16th-century Safavid design, still working, still beautiful, infamous as the place where the reformer Amir Kabir was murdered in 1852. Other major examples include Bâgh-e Eram in Shiraz and Bâgh-e Dolat-âbâd in Yazd, which holds the tallest wind-tower (بادگیر, bâdgir) in Iran. The چهارباغ design also lent its name to Isfahan's grand boulevard, Chahârbâgh Avenue, laid out by Shah Abbas in 1596 and still the central walking street of the city. The form traveled too: Mughal gardens in India (the Taj Mahal, Shalimar) follow the same fourfold logic, exported eastward by Persian-trained architects.
