What it means

آتش خانه به سایه (âtash-e khâne be sâyegh) is a classical Persian proverb. آتش (âtash) is fire, خانه (khâne) is house, سایه (sâye) is shade or shadow. The phrase means “the fire of the house reaches the shade,” or in fuller form, the warmth of one home spreads beyond its walls to those sitting outside.

The literal meaning

Picture a winter night in an old courtyard house. Inside, a fire burns, perhaps in a کرسی (korsi, a low table with a brazier underneath, blankets piled around it). The household sits around it. The warmth does not stay inside. It spills through the doorway, out into the courtyard shade, reaching the people who happen to be passing or resting outside. The image is of heat that does not respect the walls that contain it. In a society where winters could be cold and households could not always afford fuel, this overflow was a real, observable thing: a generous fire warmed more than just its keepers.

The figurative meaning

A truly generous household does not keep its warmth, food, or kindness for its own members. The good things produced inside reach outsiders too: neighbors, travelers, the poor. The proverb celebrates a particular Iranian ideal of hospitality, the family whose generosity overflows. It is also used to describe people whose presence comforts those around them, whose kindness extends beyond their immediate circle. To say of a family آتش خانه‌شون به سایه می‌رسه is high praise.

A more cynical reading also exists: the warmth that should belong to the household is being given away to strangers while the family itself shivers, meaning generosity misallocated, the parent who feeds neighbors while their own children go without. Context decides which sense applies. In speech, the praising sense is far more common.
