What it means
آلمان (Âlmân) is how Persians refer to Germany. The word was borrowed directly from French “Allemagne,” which in turn traces back to the ancient Germanic tribal confederation called the Alemanni. The adjective form is آلمانی (Âlmâni), meaning German. A useful contrast is اتریش (Otris), Austria, a neighboring German-speaking country that learners sometimes confuse with آلمان.
How to use it
- آلمان کشور صنعتی بزرگی است. (Âlmân keshvar-e san’ati-ye bozorgi ast.) “Germany is a large industrial country.”
- ماشین آلمانی داری؟ (Mâshin-e Âlmâni dâri?) “Do you have a German car?”
- برلین پایتخت آلمان است. (Berlin pâytakht-e Âlmân ast.) “Berlin is the capital of Germany.”
- دوستم در آلمان کار میکند. (Dustam dar Âlmân kâr mikonad.) “My friend works in Germany.”
Cultural note
Germany became a significant destination for Iranian immigrants, particularly after 1979, and today the Iranian diaspora in Germany is one of the largest in Europe. The word آلمان appears in daily Persian conversation more often than many other country names because of this close demographic connection. In the early twentieth century, Germany was also admired in Iran for its technological and industrial achievements, and some Iranian nationalists of that era looked to the German model for modernization.
