What it means
آهنگ (âhang) is the everyday Persian word for a song, melody, or tune. It comes directly from Middle Persian, derived from the verb آهیختن (âhixtan), meaning to draw out or pull, so the image is of a melody being drawn from an instrument or voice. The word covers a wide range: a pop song on the radio, a classical instrumental piece, or a simple melody hummed at home. A close synonym is ترانه (tarâne), which tends to refer more specifically to a song with lyrics, while آهنگ can describe purely instrumental music too.
How to use it
- این آهنگ خیلی قشنگه. (in âhang xeyli qashange.) “This song is really beautiful.”
- آهنگ مورد علاقهات چیه؟ (âhang-e mowred-e alâqat chiye?) “What is your favorite song?”
- داری به چه آهنگی گوش میدی؟ (dâri be che âhangi gush midi?) “What song are you listening to?”
- اون آهنگ رو بلدی؟ (oon âhang ro baladi?) “Do you know that tune?”
Cultural note
آهنگ is so deeply embedded in Persian daily life that it appears in expressions well beyond music. The phrase آهنگ سفر کردن (âhang-e safar kardan) means to set out on a journey, preserving the older sense of intention or direction. In Iranian pop music, a hit song is often simply called یه آهنگ (ye âhang), and music streaming apps label their track listings with this word as the default term.
