سبز is the color of spring growth, of Shia banners, and of the 2009 protest wave. A small color word that does heavy lifting.
What it actually means
سبز (sabz) means “green.” It is used for the full green range, from grass to mint to traffic lights. Persian also uses سبز metaphorically: سبز means “verdant, lush, alive” and by extension “prospering.” When Iranians say “چشمت سبز” (cheshmet sabz, “may your eye be green”), they mean “may you flourish.” The verb سبز شدن (sabz shodan) means “to sprout, to come up,” used for plants and figuratively for opportunities or people appearing.
How to use it
سبز is a regular adjective, placed after the noun:
- چمن سبز (chaman-e sabz) “green grass / lawn”
- چای سبز (châi-ye sabz) “green tea”
- چشمهای سبز (cheshm-hâ-ye sabz) “green eyes”
- چراغ سبز (cherâgh-e sabz) “green light”
Comparative سبزتر (sabz-tar); superlative سبزترین (sabz-tarin). سبزی (sabzi) is the noun “greenery, herbs,” used in Iranian cooking for the bundles of fresh herbs (parsley, cilantro, mint, dill) at every meal.

Cultural context
سبز is the color of Shia Islam: green banners, green flags on imamzadehs, the green sayyid turban worn by descendants of the Prophet. In Iranian flag symbolism, the top stripe is green and is read as the color of Islam. سبز also carries pre-Islamic weight: in classical Persian poetry سبز belongs to spring, paradise, and renewal. Hafez and Saadi pair سبز with the garden, the meadow, and the beloved’s youth. In recent political memory, سبز is the color of the 2009 Green Movement (جنبش سبز, jonbesh-e sabz), the protest wave that followed the disputed presidential election. Wearing green in summer 2009 was a political signal. Years later, سبز still triggers that association for many Iranians, layered on top of the religious and poetic ones. The color is plural: nature, faith, and politics all claim it.
