The structure follows a communicative approach: each unit introduces a cultural topic, new vocabulary, grammar concepts, and practice exercises. Roughly 20 chapters take you from zero to a solid intermediate foundation.

What Works

The multimedia package sets this apart from most textbooks. Audio recordings feature multiple native speakers, which trains your ear to different voices and speaking speeds. The cultural content is genuinely interesting, covering contemporary Iranian topics rather than recycling the same "at the bazaar" scenarios every textbook uses.

Grammar explanations are clear and build logically. By chapter 10, you're constructing compound sentences with relative clauses. The progression feels earned rather than rushed.

What Doesn't Work for Persian Learners

The price tag hurts. At ~$60, this is one of the most expensive Persian textbooks available. Self-learners without a teacher may struggle with some exercises designed for classroom pair work. The answer key situation is limited, which means you can't always verify your own work.

The register leans formal. You'll learn to write proper sentences, but the gap between textbook Persian and Tehran street talk remains wide. Colloquial forms appear only occasionally.

Persian of Iran Today is one of the best-designed Persian textbooks available. The multimedia materials, cultural content, and grammar progression justify the price if you're serious about learning. Just know you'll need to supplement with colloquial resources for real-world conversation.
