Zedd-e enghelâb literally means counter-revolutionary. The Islamic Republic uses it as a wide-net label for any organized or named opposition to the post-1979 political order, regardless of ideology.
Inside the Iranian legal system the phrase maps onto charges under articles addressing acts against national security. The shape of the label is the point: it absorbs leftist, monarchist, ethnic-minority, religious-minority, and rights-advocacy targets into a single category, simplifying prosecution and propaganda.
The 1979 revolution was a real political event with real factions. By 1981 the new state had narrowed the legitimate political space to its own faction; everyone else became zedd-e enghelâb. We document the word because Iranian state-media coverage of political prisoners runs through it.

ضد انقلاب (zedd-e enghelâb) is built from ضد (against) and انقلاب (revolution). The literal sense is counter-revolutionary. In post-1979 Iran the phrase has been the regime’s wide-net label for anyone opposed to the political order: leftists and Tudeh party members in the early 1980s, monarchists in exile, MEK fighters, Kurdish and Baluchi ethnic-minority activists, women’s-rights organizers, dual-national academics, environmentalists. The label has the same shape as Soviet-era kontrrevolyutsioner: it is less a description than an administrative category that triggers specific consequences (asset seizure, foreign-travel ban, prison, in some periods execution). The phrase appears constantly on state TV and in Revolutionary Court rulings.
