What it means
ظرفشویی (zarf-shui) has two closely related meanings in everyday Persian. First, it names the kitchen sink area, the basin and counter where dishes are washed by hand. Second, it names a dishwasher appliance, the machine that does the same job automatically. Context usually makes the meaning clear. The compound joins ظرف (zarf), an Arabic-origin word meaning vessel or container, with شویی (shui), derived from the Persian verb شستن (shostan, to wash).
