What it means

ورزشکار (varzesh-kâr) means “athlete” or “sportsperson.” The compound is pure Persian: ورزش (varzesh) “sport, exercise” plus کار (kâr) “doer, agent.” Anyone who trains and competes counts: amateur or professional, individual or team.

The same کار (kâr) suffix shows up in dozens of profession words: ورزشکار (athlete), پیمانکار (peymânkâr) “contractor,” گناهکار (gonâhkâr) “sinner,” بدهکار (bedeh-kâr) “debtor.” One of the most productive word-builders in Persian.

Iran’s main sports

Football is the obsession. The Tehran derby between Persepolis and Esteghlal pulls 80,000 fans to Azadi Stadium and shuts down city traffic for hours. Wrestling is the heritage sport. Hassan Yazdani has dominated 86kg freestyle wrestling worldwide and brought home Olympic gold in 2016. Iran wins regularly in volleyball, weightlifting (Hossein Rezazadeh held the world record at 263kg for years), and Greco-Roman wrestling. Taekwondo, futsal, and kabaddi also hold strong national programs. Chess sits at the edge of the sport category in Persian: chess players are sometimes called varzesh-kâr, sometimes شطرنج‌باز (shatranj-bâz) “chess player.”

Word build and stress

The کار (kâr) suffix takes primary stress in this compound: var-zesh-KAR. Beginners often misplace the stress on the first syllable, which makes the word sound foreign. Listening to Iranian sports broadcasts is the fastest way to fix it. The plural is ورزشکارها (varzesh-kâr-hâ) or in formal speech ورزشکاران (varzesh-kârân) with the older Persian plural suffix ـان.

The gender split

Iranian female varzesh-kâr-hâ work under hijab and full-body uniform rules at every public competition, including outside Iran. Until 2019, women were banned from attending men’s football matches in stadiums. The ban was lifted partially after the death of Sahar Khodayari, the “Blue Girl,” who self-immolated after being arrested for entering a stadium dressed as a man.

The women’s national football team kept playing and qualifying anyway. So did female climbers, chess players, and shooters. Elnaz Rekabi competed without a hijab at the 2022 Asian climbing championships in Seoul and made global news. The word ورزشکار, applied to a woman in Iran, sits inside that fight.
