What it means
ورزشگاه (varzeshgah) means a stadium, sports ground, or athletic venue. The word is fully native Persian: ورزش (varzesh, meaning exercise or sport, from Middle Persian) combined with the place-suffix گاه (gah, meaning a place or time for something). You will hear it for everything from a full national football stadium to a small neighbourhood gym. A close related word is زمین ورزش (zamin-e varzesh), which refers more specifically to a playing field or pitch.
How to use it
- بریم ورزشگاه فوتبال ببینیم. (berim varzeshgah football bebinim.) “Let’s go to the stadium to watch football.”
- ورزشگاه آزادی بزرگترین ورزشگاه ایران است. (varzeshgah-e Azadi bozorgtarin varzeshgah-e Iran ast.) “Azadi Stadium is the largest stadium in Iran.”
- دیشب ورزشگاه پر بود. (dishab varzeshgah por bud.) “The stadium was full last night.”
- امروز تمرین ما توی ورزشگاه است. (emruz tamrin-e ma tuye varzeshgah ast.) “Our practice is at the sports ground today.”
Cultural note
The most famous ورزشگاه in Iran is Azadi Stadium in Tehran, one of the largest football stadiums in the world by capacity. Football (soccer) draws by far the largest crowds, and match days at Azadi are national events. Women were historically barred from attending men’s football matches in Iran, a restriction that saw partial, limited relaxation in 2019 when some women were officially permitted to enter Azadi for an international qualifying match, though the broader situation remained contested after that date.
