A2 — Elementary

What it means

طرف (taraf) means side, direction, or toward. It comes from Arabic, where the root ط-ر-ف refers to an edge or extremity. In spoken Persian it is extremely common and more relaxed in tone than سمت (samt), which overlaps in meaning but leans more formal. Beyond physical direction, طرف also means guy or person in informal Tehran speech: اون طرفه (un tarafe) can mean that person as easily as that side. Context makes the distinction clear.

How to use it

  • برو اون طرف (boro un taraf) “Go over to that side.”
  • طرف راست یا چپ؟ (taraf-e râst yâ chap?) “Right side or left side?”
  • اون طرف خیابون (un taraf-e khiâbun) “On the other side of the street.”
  • از کدوم طرف اومدی؟ (az kodum taraf umadi?) “Which way did you come from?”

Cultural note

In casual Tehran conversation, طرف as a word for person or guy is so common that it has almost lost its directional flavor in that context. Saying اون طرف خیلی پررو بود (un taraf kheyli parro bud), meaning that guy was really rude, is completely natural. This dual use, direction and person, is one of the features that makes طرف a high-frequency word worth mastering early. It also appears in the polite phrase از طرف (az taraf-e), meaning on behalf of, used when delivering greetings or gifts.
