What it means
تخته (takhteh) is the Persian word for a flat rigid piece: a plank of wood, a board, a sheet, a slab. It is also a counter for things shaped that way. یک تخته نرد (yek takhteh nard) is one backgammon set, the board itself standing in for the whole game. یک تخته فرش (yek takhteh farsh) is one carpet, the rug counted as a flat unit. The word picks up anything you can lay out flat and call a single piece.
Not the same as takht
Watch the vowel. تخت (takht) without the final ه is bed, throne, or the flat surface you sit or lie on. تخته (takhteh) with ه is the smaller flat piece, the board or plank. The two share an ancient root (flat thing) but they parted ways long ago and now name different objects. A king sits on a takht, a backgammon player rolls dice on a takhteh. Mixing them up is a beginner tell, fix the difference early.
What it counts
The everyday counter uses are these: backgammon boards (یک تخته نرد), carpets and rugs as full pieces (دو تخته قالی, two carpets), planks of wood at the lumber yard (سه تخته چوب, three planks of wood), and large flat items like blackboards or whiteboards in a school (پنج تخته تابلو). For modern uses, شطرنج (shatranj, chess sets) also takes takhteh in shops. The shape rule holds, flat and countable as a unit.

Where it comes from
takhteh is a native Persian word with deep roots in Middle Persian taxtag (board, plank), built on the same flat-surface root that gives takht (throne, bed). The shape sense is what survives, anything broad and flat enough to lay out gets the name. The counter use grew naturally from the noun: a single takhteh of carpet, of wood, of board.
In our voice
Two words to lock in together, takht and takhteh, so your Persian does not flatten them into one. Learn takhteh through یک تخته نرد and you will hear it again the first time you walk into a carpet shop. It is one of those counters that signals you know what you are talking about.
