What it means

شعبه (sho’be) means a branch or outlet of a larger institution, most commonly a bank, company, government office, or chain store. The word comes directly from Arabic شُعْبَة (shu’ba), meaning a branch, division, or subdivision, from the root ش-ع-ب related to branching and diverging. In Persian it has been in use for centuries and is fully naturalized: it carries no foreign-sounding weight for a native speaker. The closest everyday synonym is شاخه (shâkhe), which is more often used for tree branches and figurative meanings, while شعبه is reserved almost exclusively for institutional branches.

How to use it

  • شعبه اصلی بانک کجاست؟ (Sho’be-ye asli-ye bânk kojâst?) “Where is the main branch of the bank?”
  • باید برم شعبه، کارم آنلاین حل نمیشه. (Bâyad baram sho’be, kâram ânlâyn hal nemishe.) “I have to go to the branch, my issue can’t be resolved online.”
  • این شعبه روز پنجشنبه تعطیله. (In sho’be ruz-e panjshanbe ta’tile.) “This branch is closed on Thursday.”
  • شعبه جدید بانک ملی رو افتتاح کردن. (Sho’be-ye jadid-e Bank-e Melli ro eftitâh kardan.) “They’ve opened a new branch of Bank Melli.”

Cultural note

Visiting a شعبه in Iran is an experience that still requires patience: many banking transactions that would be done online elsewhere must be done in person, with a queue number and a wait. Iranian bank branches are known for a multi-window system where different functions, deposits, loans, and foreign exchange are handled at separate باجه (bâje) windows. The word شعبه also appears in the names of government agencies and ministries, reflecting its broad institutional use beyond banking.
