Yalda predates Islam by thousands of years. It is Zoroastrian in origin, tied to the rebirth of Mithra, the god of light. The ritual survived the Islamic conquest, the Mongol invasion, the Safavid era, the Pahlavi era, and the Islamic Republic. Iranian families still gather, and the pomegranate still anchors the table. The fruit's seeds, packed tight inside a leathery skin, are read as a metaphor for endurance: the cold cannot reach them, the sun returns from inside. Diaspora families in Los Angeles, Toronto, and Berlin keep the night going with bowls of pomegranates flown in from California. The ritual outlives the geography.
