What it means
سواری (savari) comes from the pure Persian root سوار (savar), meaning rider or mounted, itself tracing back to Middle Persian aswār. The noun سواری covers the act of riding as well as the vehicle used. In modern colloquial Iranian Persian, سواری most commonly refers to a shared long-distance taxi: a private car, usually a sedan, that travels a fixed route between cities and fills its seats with multiple paying passengers before departing. This is distinct from a دربستی (darbasti), which is a privately chartered ride. A close everyday synonym in urban contexts is تاکسی اشتراکی (taksi-ye eshteraki), but سواری is the word you will hear at intercity terminals.

Cultural note
The سواری system is a major pillar of intercity travel in Iran, especially for routes not served by train or for travellers who want a faster, more flexible option than a bus. Drivers wait at designated terminal bays until the car is full, typically four passengers, then depart. Fares are fixed by the route and are sometimes posted, though negotiation is normal. The system functions largely informally and drivers are often licensed under a cooperative. For many Iranians travelling between smaller cities, the سواری is simply the standard way to go.
