What it means
آژانس (azhans) is borrowed directly from the French word agence, meaning agency or bureau. In Iranian Persian the word has taken on a specific colloquial meaning: a local taxi dispatch office, the kind you call by phone to book a car that comes to your door. This is distinct from a street taxi (تاکسی, taksi) that you flag down, or a ride-app booking. The آژانس model, common in Iranian cities, operates through a neighbourhood office that takes calls and dispatches registered drivers. The French origin explains the ژ sound, which never appears in words borrowed from Arabic, even though ژ itself is a native Persian phoneme found in words such as ژاله and مژه.

- زنگ زدم به آژانس ماشین بیاد. (zang zadam be azhans mashin biad.) “I called the cab company to send a car.”
- آژانس سر کوچهمونه. (azhans sar-e kuche-mune.) “The taxi office is at the top of our alley.”
- با آژانس رفتم فرودگاه. (ba azhans raftam forudgah.) “I took a cab-company car to the airport.”
- شماره آژانسشون رو داری؟ (shomare-ye azhanseshun ro dari?) “Do you have their cab company’s number?”
Cultural note
Before ride-hailing apps such as Snapp and Tap30 became widespread, the آژانس was the main way Iranians booked a car without stepping outside. Every neighbourhood had at least one, often identifiable by a small sign and a dispatcher sitting behind a desk with a radio. The model persists today, particularly for airport runs, late-night trips, or in areas with limited app coverage. Calling an آژانس is also seen as slightly more reliable for known, trusted drivers in contexts where safety matters, such as solo travel for women at night.
