What it means
صندلی اداری (sandali-ye edâri) is the standard Persian term for an office chair or desk chair, the kind with wheels and adjustable height found in workplaces. صندلی (sandali, “chair”) entered Persian through Arabic. اداری (edâri, “administrative, office-related”) is an Arabic-root adjective derived from اداره (edâre, “administration, office”). Together the phrase simply means “administrative chair,” but in practice it always refers to what English speakers call an office chair. A related term is صندلی گردان (sandali-ye gardân, “swivel chair”), which emphasizes the rotating feature.
How to use it
- یه صندلی اداری خوب برای کمرم نیاز دارم. (Ye sandali-ye edâri-ye khub barâ-ye kamaram niyâz dâram.) “I need a good office chair for my back.”
- صندلی اداریم شکست. (Sandali-ye edârim shekast.) “My office chair broke.”
- این صندلی اداری ارگونومیکه. (In sandali-ye edâri ergonomikie.) “This office chair is ergonomic.”
- قیمت صندلیهای اداری خیلی بالا رفته. (Qeymat-e sandali-hâ-ye edâri kheyli bâlâ rafte.) “Office chair prices have gone up a lot.”
Cultural note
In Iran, office furniture is a recognized status marker. A heavy leather صندلی اداری behind a large desk signals managerial rank, and subordinates often sit on simpler chairs. The market for ergonomic office chairs has grown significantly with the rise of remote work and home-office setups among younger Iranians, particularly in tech and creative industries in Tehran. Furniture districts such as خیابان جمهوری (Jomhuri Street) in Tehran are known for selling office furniture including a wide range of صندلی اداری models at varying price points.
