What it means
ساختمان (sâkhtemân) means a building or structure, whether residential, commercial, or governmental. It is derived from the native Persian verb ساختن (sâkhtan, to build or to make) through the addition of the suffix -mân, which forms abstract or collective nouns in Persian. The result is a fully native word with no foreign borrowing involved. ساختمان covers everything from a small two-story house to a government ministry headquarters. A close companion word is بنا (banâ), which is the Arabic-origin synonym leaning more toward a constructed monument or edifice, whereas ساختمان is the unmarked, neutral everyday term.

Iran experienced a construction boom in the 1990s and 2000s that transformed the skylines of Tehran and other major cities, replacing older low-rise neighborhoods with high-rise ساختمان blocks. The word appears constantly in bureaucratic contexts, such as ساختمان شهرداری (sâkhtemân-e shahr-dâri, municipal building) or ساختمان وزارت (sâkhtemân-e vezârat, ministry building). The quality and age of a ساختمان are frequent concerns for tenants and buyers given Iran’s seismic activity, and earthquake-resistance standards for buildings have been a matter of ongoing public discussion since major earthquakes in Bam (2003) and elsewhere.
