What it means
خانهسازی (khâne-sâzi) describes the activity of building houses, or residential construction as a sector. Both parts are pure Persian: خانه (khâne, house) is an ancient word found across Iranian languages, and سازی (sâzi) is the noun form of ساختن (sâkhtan, to build or make). Together they name the whole process of constructing a home, from laying foundations to finishing interiors. A broader term is ساختوساز (sâkht-o-sâz, construction in general), while آپارتمانسازی (âpârtmân-sâzi) narrows the meaning to apartment building specifically.

- خانهسازی تو این منطقه ممنوعه. (khâne-sâzi tu in mantaqe mamnu’e.) “House construction in this area is prohibited.”
- قیمت مصالح خانهسازی خیلی بالا رفته. (qimat-e masâleh-e khâne-sâzi khyli bâlâ rafte.) “The cost of house-building materials has gone up a lot.”
- تخصصش خانهسازی اقتصادیه. (takhasosash khâne-sâzi-ye eqtesâdiye.) “His specialty is affordable house-building.”
- دولت برنامه خانهسازی جدیدی اعلام کرد. (dowlat barnâme-ye khâne-sâzi-ye jadidi e’lâm kard.) “The government announced a new house-building programme.”
Cultural note
Residential construction has been one of the most politically and economically sensitive topics in Iran for decades. Rapid rural-to-urban migration, especially toward Tehran, created chronic housing shortages that successive governments have tried to address through mass-housing schemes such as Mehr Housing and, more recently, National Housing projects. The word خانهسازی appears constantly in news coverage of these policies, giving it a slightly official tone even in everyday speech. Self-built rural homes, often constructed by extended family members together, still exist in many provinces and carry the same word.
