What it means
سایت (sait) is the loaned English word for a website. It is one of the earliest internet-era loans, dating to the dial-up days of the late 1990s, and one of the most fully naturalized words in modern Persian. Iranians use it without any sense of foreignness, in formal writing and casual speech alike. Every Iranian web property describes itself as a سایت. Government portals are saits. News outlets are saits. University pages are saits. The blog you are reading is a sait.

The naming convention
Iranian Persian builds website names with sait as the head: سایت تپسی (sait-e Tapsi, the Tapsi site), سایت دیجیکالا (sait-e Digikala), سایت بانک ملی (sait-e bank-e melli, the Bank Melli site). The pattern is so productive that learners can name almost any Iranian web property by sticking sait-e in front of the brand and adding a kasreh. The same pattern handles English sites: سایت گوگل (sait-e Google), سایت ویکیپدیا (sait-e Wikipedia). The kasreh ezafe is what does the work; sait itself stays stable.
What it displaced
The Farhangestan has at various points proposed وبگاه (vebgah, web-place) and پایگاه اینترنتی (paygah-e internet-i, internet site) as Pure Persian alternatives. Both appear in some state-sector copy and on official government portals. Almost no Iranian uses either in speech, and even fewer in casual writing. Sait is the everyday word, full stop. This is one of the clearest cases where the Pure Persian movement has lost a contest with a loanword: the English word arrived early, settled deep, and now sounds native enough that the alternatives feel artificial.
Where the word comes from
Sait is the English site, narrowed in Persian to mean website specifically. The phonology shifts slightly: English /saIt/ becomes Persian سایت with a long ا and a clear final ت. The word entered Persian in the mid-1990s, when home internet access first reached Iranian cities through dial-up. It has been the default term ever since, surviving every wave of new platforms and every push for native vocabulary.
