ساحل

The Caspian coast (ساحل خزر) is the dominant Iranian beach culture. Tehranis drive north on long weekends to villas, rental rooms, and roadside grilled-fish stands. The water is fresh enough to feel like a lake, the shore is lined with rice paddies and tea plantations, and the standard summer trip is to swim, eat ماهی سفید (white fish), and come back covered in mosquito bites. The Persian Gulf coast is a different world: hotter, drier, with palm trees, dhow boats, and the free-trade island of کیش (Kish), which Iranians visit for shopping and slightly relaxed dress codes. Beach segregation in Iran (separated swimming areas for men and women) shapes the experience, and the coastline carries some of the country's quietest political tensions about how public space is regulated. In poetry, ساحل often functions as the safe arrival point: the شناگر (shenâgar, swimmer) struggling toward the shore is a recurring image of the soul reaching its rest. There is also a softer everyday use, کنار ساحل (kenâr-e sâhel, "by the shore"), a phrase that Iranian songwriters lean on the way English-language pop reaches for "by the sea."
