What it means

سبد (sabad) means “basket,” the container, usually woven from cane, plastic, or wire, that you carry or fill with things like fruit, bread, or laundry. It is a common everyday Persian word that covers a wide range of baskets: a fruit basket (سبد میوه), a laundry basket (سبد لباس), and the picnic hamper you take outdoors. In modern life it is also the word for the online shopping “cart” (سبد خرید). A close cousin is زنبیل (zanbil), another word for a carry basket, but سبد is the everyday term you will hear most.

How to use it

  • یه سبد میوه بخر (ye sabad-e mive bekhar) “buy a basket of fruit”
  • لباسا رو بذار تو سبد (lebâsâ ro bezâr tu sabad) “put the clothes in the basket”
  • سبد خریدت خالیه (sabad-e kharidet khâliye) “your shopping cart is empty”
  • نون رو از تو سبد بردار (nun ro az tu sabad bardâr) “take the bread out of the basket”

Cultural note

In an Iranian home, a سبد of fresh fruit is a normal thing to keep on the table, since offering fruit to guests is a basic part of hospitality. Woven cane baskets are common for bread and fruit, while plastic or mesh ones hold laundry and vegetables. At the bazaar and the local greengrocer, shopkeepers often pile produce into baskets, and online in Iran the checkout button still says سبد خرید for your cart.
