قرن

When Iranians count centuries, they usually mean the Hijri solar century, not the Gregorian one. حافظ (Hafez) is called a poet of the 8th century because he died in 791 AH (1389 CE). فردوسی (Ferdowsi) is of the 4th century AH (10th-11th century CE). This dating shift can confuse foreign readers: an 8th-century Persian poet is medieval, not late antique. Modern Iranian writing often gives both: قرن هشتم هجری, قمری برابر با قرن چهاردهم میلادی. The unit قرن is the same; the calendar attached to it is what shifts.
