What it means

پوشش دیوار (pushesh-e divâr) refers to any material used to cover or clad a wall surface, whether that is paint, plaster, tiles, stone panels, cladding boards, or wallpaper. Both components are pure Persian: پوشش (pushesh) derives from پوشیدن (pushidan, to cover or wear), and دیوار (divâr) traces back to Old Iranian and means wall. The term is broad by design. When speakers want to be specific, they say کاغذ دیواری (kâghaz-e divâri, wallpaper, literally wall paper) or روکش دیوار (rukesh-e divâr, wall veneer or facing).

How to use it

  • پوشش دیوار اتاق رو عوض کردیم. (pushesh-e divâr-e otâq ro avaz kardim.) “We changed the wall covering in the room.”
  • بهترین پوشش دیوار برای حموم چیه؟ (behtarin pushesh-e divâr barâye hammum chiye?) “What is the best wall covering for a bathroom?”
  • این پوشش دیوار ضدرطوبته. (in pushesh-e divâr zedd-e rotubate.) “This wall covering is moisture-resistant.”
  • پوشش دیوار خارجی باید مقاوم باشه. (pushesh-e divâr-e khâreji bâyad moqâvem bâshe.) “The exterior wall cladding needs to be durable.”

Cultural note

In traditional Iranian interior design, bare plaster walls were common in modest homes, while wealthier households used tile mosaics, carved plaster (گچ‌بری, gachbori), or mirror work (آینه‌کاری, âyinekâri) as decorative wall coverings. Contemporary Iranian apartments strongly favour ceramic and porcelain tiles in wet areas, and painted or wallpapered gypsum board in living spaces. The imported wallpaper market grew significantly in the 2010s, bringing European and Turkish patterns into Iranian homes alongside the older tradition of painted walls.
