پرده

What it means

پرده (parde) means “curtain” or “drape,” the cloth you hang over a window to block light or for privacy. It is a pure Persian word with a wide reach: the same word names a theatre or cinema curtain (پرده سینما), and figuratively it means a veil or cover over something hidden, as in پرده برداشتن (to unveil, to reveal). The fabric panel itself is the everyday meaning in any home.

How to use it

• پرده رو بکش (parde ro bekesh) “draw the curtain”
• پرده رو بزن کنار (parde ro bezan kenâr) “pull the curtain aside”
• پرده اتاق خواب رو عوض کردیم (parde-ye otâq-e khâb ro avaz kardim) “we changed the bedroom curtains”
• نور از لای پرده میاد تو (nur az lâ-ye parde miyâd tu) “light comes in through the gap in the curtain”

Cultural note

Heavy, layered curtains are common in Iranian homes, often a sheer net layer (توری) behind a thicker decorative panel. Privacy from the street matters, so many families keep curtains drawn in front rooms, and a fresh set of پرده is a typical part of redecorating before Nowruz.
