What it means
پی دی اف (pi-di-ef) is the Persian word for a PDF file, the portable document format that runs Iranian academic, legal, and bureaucratic life. University course readers, court documents, lecture handouts, parliamentary bills, censor-skirting samizdat books, all PDFs. Walk into any university WhatsApp group and the most-shared file type is پی دی اف, by a wide margin.
Pronunciation: the standard reading is PI-DI-EF, English letter-by-letter. Some older speakers, especially academics trained in continental European systems, say په ده اف (pe-de-ef) following the French or German letter names. Both are understood; PI-DI-EF dominates by an order of magnitude.
Why PDFs matter in Iran
Iranian academic culture runs on photocopied and scanned PDFs in ways that have decayed elsewhere. Western paywalls and import restrictions on academic books pushed entire university curricula onto pirated PDFs in the 2000s and never really left. A graduate student in Tehran has more PDFs on her hard drive than physical books. Legal documents follow the same logic: court rulings, deeds, contracts, all circulate as scanned PDFs because the legal system never digitized into native databases. The result is a vocabulary where the file format itself names a category of object the language did not previously have a single word for.

Where it comes from
PDF is short for Portable Document Format, the file standard Adobe introduced in 1993 and released as an open standard in 2008. Persian borrowed the acronym wholesale, the way every language did, because no domestic format ever competed with it. The Pure Persian Movement has not proposed a calque; even the most aggressive Farhangestan circles treat acronyms as untouchable on the basis that they name proprietary international standards rather than concepts.
In our voice
Say پی دی اف with the English letter names (PI-DI-EF). It will mark you as a normal Iranian internet user. The PE-DE-EF reading is fine, slightly old-school, slightly continental, and will get a half-second look but no correction.
