What it means
پهلوان (pahlavan) is a champion, a strongman, a hero. In modern Persian a sportsman who wins a national wrestling title is a pahlavan. In older usage the word reaches further, naming a person who combines physical strength with humility, generosity, and protection of the weak. It is the pre-modern Iranian masculine ideal, the figure Rostam stands for in the شاهنامه (shahnameh) and the figure the زورخانه (zurkhane) tries to train.

The ethical content
The word is bound to جوانمردی (javanmardi), the ethics of chivalrous decency: honesty, kindness to the smaller party, modesty even after winning. A muscular bully is not a pahlavan, no matter how many fights he wins. A wrestler who lets his opponent save face after a loss, helps a stranger carry a load home, and refuses to brag is closer to it. Iranians will quote the line هر که بامش بیش، برفش بیشتر (har ke bamesh bish, barfesh bishtar, the higher your roof, the more snow falls on it) to describe what a pahlavan is supposed to carry quietly.
Where it lives today
The clearest living home of the pahlavan ideal is the زورخانه, the house of strength, a sunken octagonal pit called the گود (gowd) where men train together in koshti-pahlevani (Persian traditional wrestling) and swing mil-sangin (heavy clubs) while a morshed beats a drum and recites Ferdowsi. The bodies in there are working on the same ideal the word names.
In our voice
Pahlavan is one of the most generous masculine words in Persian. It honors strength only when strength behaves. Anyone can lift; few earn the title. Iranians use it as an affectionate honorific too, calling a kind butcher or a strong neighbor پهلوان in passing, half compliment and half quiet reminder of what the word actually asks of a person.
