What it means
پادگان (pâdegân) means a military barracks or garrison, a base where soldiers are stationed, trained, and housed. The word is native Persian: پاد (pâd) is an old Persian element meaning guard or protection (visible also in پاسبان, pâsbân, meaning guard), and the suffix گان (gân) marks a collective or place. The compound thus describes a place of guarding or a fortified station. In practice, pâdegân is the ordinary word for any military installation from a small regional base to a large training garrison. For Iranian men, the word is inseparable from سربازی (sarbâzi), mandatory military service: رفتن سربازی به پادگان (raftan-e sarbâzi be pâdegân) is a phrase most Iranian families know from personal experience.

- رفت پادگان (raft pâdegân) “He went to do his military service.” (said without a preposition in colloquial speech)
- پادگان بزرگیه (pâdegân-e bozorgiye) “It is a big barracks.”
- از پادگان مرخصی گرفت (az pâdegân morakhassi gereft) “He got leave from the barracks.”
- نزدیک پادگانه (nazdik-e pâdegâne) “It is near the military base.”
Cultural note
Mandatory military service (سربازی) is a near-universal rite of passage for Iranian men, typically lasting between eighteen months and two years. The پادگان is where this service is served, and stories from the barracks, ranging from absurd bureaucracy to genuine camaraderie, form a shared layer of Iranian male social memory. Conversations among Iranian men of a certain age frequently drift to پادگان stories, and the word carries a texture of shared hardship and dark humor that goes well beyond its dictionary definition.
