What it means
پاکستان (Pâkestân) is the name used in Persian for the country Pakistan. The name was coined in 1933 from Persian elements: “pâk” meaning pure or clean, and “stân” meaning land or place of, a suffix common in Persian geography. Although the elements are Persian, the name itself was created in Urdu and then adopted into Farsi as a proper noun. There is no native Persian synonym, but when Iranians speak about the region more broadly they may refer to شبهقاره (shebh-e qâre, the subcontinent).

- من هرگز به پاکستان نرفتهام. (Man hargez be Pâkestân narafte-am.) “I have never been to Pakistan.”
- غذای پاکستانی خیلی ادویهدار است. (Ghazâ-ye Pâkestâni kheyli adviye-dâr ast.) “Pakistani food is very spicy.”
- پاکستان همسایه ایران است. (Pâkestân hamsâye-ye Irân ast.) “Pakistan is a neighbor of Iran.”
- دوستم از پاکستان آمده. (Dustam az Pâkestân âmade.) “My friend has come from Pakistan.”
Cultural note
Iran and Pakistan share a long border and a common cultural thread: both countries have substantial Persian-speaking and Persian-influenced populations, and classical Persian literature is part of the shared heritage of the region. Urdu, Pakistan’s national language, draws heavily on Persian vocabulary and script. Many Iranians are aware of this linguistic kinship and feel a cultural closeness to Pakistan that goes beyond mere geography.
