What it means

دلتا (deltâ) describes the flat, often triangular area formed where a river deposits sediment as it empties into a sea, lake, or larger river. The term is a direct borrowing from Greek, where delta is the name of the letter Δ, whose triangular shape resembled the Nile’s fan-shaped mouth. Ancient Greek writers applied the letter name to this landform, and the word entered Persian as an international scientific and geographic term. There is no native Persian equivalent in common use, so دلتا is the standard word in both formal and everyday contexts.

How to use it

  • دلتای رود نیل بسیار حاصلخیزه. (Deltâ-ye rud-e Nil besyâr hâselkhize.) “The delta of the Nile River is very fertile.”
  • شهر روی دلتا ساخته شده. (Shahr ru-ye deltâ sâkhte shode.) “The city was built on the delta.”
  • سیل دلتا رو زیر آب برد. (Seyl deltâ ro zir-e âb bord.) “The flood submerged the delta.”
  • دلتاها معمولا زمین خیلی مسطحی دارن. (Deltâhâ mamulan zamin-e kheyli mosattahi dâran.) “Deltas usually have very flat land.”

Cultural note

Iran does not have a world-famous delta, but the area where the Karun River and other Khuzestan rivers reach the Persian Gulf creates a significant wetland system. The Mesopotamian marshes that straddle the Iran-Iraq border represent one of the largest river delta systems in the Middle East, and they carry deep historical and ecological importance. The word دلتا is most commonly encountered in school geography lessons and news coverage of international river systems or floods.
