What it means
نورولوژیست (norolozhist) refers to a specialist doctor who diagnoses and treats conditions of the brain, spinal cord, and nervous system. The word entered Persian from French neurologiste, the form that matches Persian pronunciation with ژ (/ʒ/), a sound characteristic of French and absent in English neurologist. French itself built the term from Greek roots: neuron (nerve) and logos (study). In Persian, you might also hear متخصص مغز و اعصاب (motakhasses-e maghz-o-a’sab), meaning “brain and nerves specialist,” which is a more descriptive native alternative. Both are used in formal medical settings.
How to use it
- دکترم من رو پیش نورولوژیست فرستاد. (doktaram man-o pish-e norolozhist ferestâd.) “My doctor sent me to a neurologist.”
- نورولوژیست گفت این سردردها میگرن هستن. (norolozhist goft in sardard-hâ migren hastan.) “The neurologist said these headaches are migraines.”
- باید وقت نورولوژیست بگیرم. (bâyad vaqt-e norolozhist begiram.) “I need to make an appointment with a neurologist.”
- نورولوژیست MRI مغزم رو بررسی کرد. (norolozhist MRI-ye maghzam-ro barrasi kard.) “The neurologist reviewed my brain MRI.”
Cultural note
In Iran, specialist doctors like neurologists typically work within both the public hospital system (bimarestan-haye dowlati) and private clinics. Patients often need a referral from a general practitioner to see a specialist under the national insurance system. The field of neurology is commonly referred to in Iran as نورولوژی (norolozhi) or مغز و اعصاب (maghz-o-a’sab), and both terms appear on clinic signboards. Wait times for neurology appointments at public hospitals can be long, so many patients opt for private practice.
