What it means
نازنین (nazanin) is a Persian adjective and term of endearment meaning dear, sweet, lovely, precious. It comes from the noun ناز (naz, charm, coyness, sweet preciousness) plus the suffix -ین (-in), which forms adjectives of quality. The literal sense is something like full of charm, worthy of being cherished.
In everyday speech, nazanin is what a mother calls her child, what a husband calls his wife, what a grandmother calls anyone she loves. It sits in the warm, intimate register and never carries irony.
As a name
Nazanin is also one of the most popular female given names in Iran, common across generations and class lines. International readers may recognize it from Nazanin Boniadi, the British-Iranian actress, or from Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, the British-Iranian aid worker held in Iran from 2016 to 2022. The name has been steadily in the top 20 for Iranian girls since the 1980s.

Where it comes from
Pure Persian, built from ناز (naz) plus the adjectival suffix -ین (-in) seen in words like زرّین (zarrin, golden), سیمین (simin, silvery), شیرین (shirin, sweet). The pattern is productive in classical Persian poetry, and nazanin is heavily used in Hafez and Saadi as a poetic term for the beloved.
