What it means
نمایش (namayesh) is the Persian word for a show, a performance, a display, anything publicly presented to an audience. It is the umbrella word: a stage play is a نمایش, a film screening is a نمایش, an art exhibition has a نمایش, a TV broadcast can be called the نمایش of a program. The verb at its core is نمودن (nemudan, to show, to display), and the noun simply names the act of showing.
Older than cinema, the word covered ta’zieh, the Shi’i passion plays performed in town squares for the mourning of Imam Hossein, and the popular ruhowzi comedies staged in courtyards. When film arrived in Iran in the early twentieth century, namayesh extended naturally to cover screenings. Today it is the broadest category word in the performance vocabulary.
How to use it
Use namayesh as the general word. For a specific theatrical release of a film, reach for اکران (ekran, see entry). For a stage performance, namayesh is the standard word, often paired with تئاتر (te’atr, theater) or بدون قید (without modifier) when the context is clear.
diruz raftim namayesh-e te’atr.
Yesterday we went to the theater performance.
دیروز رفتیم نمایش تئاتر.
namayesh-e in film az fardā shoru’ mishavad.
The screening of this film starts tomorrow.
نمایش این فیلم از فردا شروع میشود.
Namayesh versus ekran
The two words overlap and many Iranians use them loosely, but a clean separation helps. Namayesh is the act of showing, any showing, in any venue. Ekran is the specific industry term for a film’s commercial theatrical release. A small festival might offer a namayesh of an old film without that film being on ekran. A film that has finished its commercial run is no longer ekran but can still be the subject of a namayesh at a cinematheque. If you are talking about a stage play or a TV broadcast, only namayesh works; ekran will sound wrong.
Where it comes from
Namayesh is a Pure Persian word built on the present stem نما (nama) of نمودن (nemudan, to show, to display), plus the abstract-noun suffix ـش (esh), the same suffix that gives دانش (danesh, knowledge, from دانستن), خواهش (khahesh, request, from خواستن), and کنش (konesh, action, from کردن). The whole noun reads as “the showing.” It is a clean native formation with no Arabic underlayer.
