What it means
صفحهنمایش (safhe-namayesh) is the standard Persian term for a display screen or monitor. It is a compound of two parts: صفحه (safhe), meaning page or surface, which entered Persian from the Arabic word صفحة (safhah), and نمایش (namayesh), meaning display or showing, which is native Persian from the root نمایدن (namayidan, to show). Together they form the equivalent of screen or display in technical and everyday contexts. In casual speech Iranians also say مانیتور (monitor), borrowed directly from English.
How to use it
- صفحهنمایش لپتاپم شکست. (safhe-namayesh laptapam shekast.) “My laptop screen broke.”
- یه صفحهنمایش بزرگتر میخوام. (ye safhe-namayesh bozorgtar mikham.) “I want a bigger monitor.”
- روشنایی صفحهنمایش رو کم کن. (rowshanayi safhe-namayesh ro kam kon.) “Lower the screen brightness.”
- این صفحهنمایش لمسیه. (in safhe-namayesh lamsieh.) “This is a touchscreen.”
Cultural note
The Academy of Persian Language and Literature (Farhangestan) promoted صفحهنمایش as the recommended formal replacement for monitor and screen in official and educational contexts. In practice, Iranians use both forms depending on register: official documents and tech journalism tend to use صفحهنمایش, while daily conversation often defaults to مانیتور or اسکرین.
