What it means

موزاییک (mozâik) refers to mosaic work or, more commonly in everyday Iranian speech, to the small square or hexagonal ceramic floor tiles that cover most apartment and house floors in Iran. The word is a European loanword, borrowed from French mosaique or Italian mosaico, which themselves trace back to Byzantine Greek mouseion and ultimately to Latin musivum. In Persian, موزاییک has shifted somewhat from the classical art sense of small tesserae forming pictures toward the practical meaning of any patterned or plain ceramic floor tile. The native alternative for decorative tilework is کاشی (kâshi), which refers to glazed ceramic tiles and carries more traditional and architectural weight.

How to use it

  • کف حیاط رو با موزاییک فرش کردن. (kaf-e heyât ro bâ mozâik farsh kardan.) “They covered the courtyard floor with mosaic tiles.”
  • موزاییک‌های قدیمی خونه لق شدن. (mozâik-hâ-ye qadimi-ye khune laq shodan.) “The old floor tiles in the house have come loose.”
  • برای حمام، موزاییک ضدلغزش بخر. (barâ-ye hammâm, mozâik-e zedd-laghzesh bekhar.) “Buy non-slip tiles for the bathroom.”
  • اون موزاییک هشت‌ضلعی خیلی شیکه. (un mozâik-e hasht-zelei kheyli shike.) “Those octagonal tiles are very stylish.”

Cultural note

Ceramic floor tiles have been central to Iranian domestic architecture for centuries, though the Persian tradition historically used کاشی for the ornate glazed tiles seen in mosques, shrines, and royal pavilions. From the mid-twentieth century onward, industrially produced موزاییک became the standard flooring for apartments and new houses, and the word entered everyday speech as the default term for floor tile of any kind. Older Iranian homes often feature handmade terrazzo-style موزاییک pressed on-site, a technique now largely replaced by machine-cut ceramic or porcelain. In bazaars and tile shops, سنگ (sang, stone) and سرامیک (serâmik, ceramic) are also used alongside موزاییک depending on material and finish.
