موکت

What it means

موکت (moket) means “wall-to-wall carpet” or “fitted carpeting,” the kind that covers an entire floor and is fixed in place rather than laid loose. It is a European loanword, from French “moquette.” The distinction matters in Persian: a فرش is a separate rug you can pick up and move, while موکت is the fitted covering, common in offices, rented flats, and bedrooms.

How to use it

• کل اتاق موکت شده (kol-e otâq moket shode) “the whole room is carpeted (with fitted carpet)”
• موکت رو عوض کردن (moket ro avaz kardan) “to replace the fitted carpet”
• موکت لکه شده (moket lake shode) “the carpet has a stain”
• زیر مبل موکته (zir-e mobl mokete) “there is fitted carpet under the sofa”

Cultural note

موکت is often seen as the practical, modern alternative to a hand-knotted فرش: cheaper, easier to clean, and common in apartments, schools, and offices. Many Iranian families still prefer a real فرش in the main guest room and use موکت in bedrooms or hallways.
