What it means
مستطیل (mostatil) means “rectangle,” a four-sided shape where opposite sides are equal and all four corners are right angles. The word is an Arabic loanword, derived from Form X of the root ط-و-ل meaning “length,” giving the sense of “elongated” or “made long.” That origin makes sense: a rectangle is essentially a stretched square. In Persian, مستطیل is the standard term in school mathematics and everyday descriptions of elongated shapes. Its close relative is مربع (morabba’, square), which shares the same category of right-angle quadrilaterals.

Cultural note
The rectangle is the most common shape in Iranian urban architecture and everyday objects, from the proportions of traditional courtyard houses to the layout of carpet looms. Persian carpet design often divides the field into rectangular sections called لچک (lachak) and ترنج (toranj), and the overall carpet border is typically a rectangular frame. The Arabic-derived term مستطیل entered Persian through classical geometry texts translated from Greek via Arabic during the medieval Islamic scholarly period.
