مروارید

What it means

مروارید (morvârid) means pearl, the gem formed inside a bivalve mollusc. The word is entirely native Persian, inherited from Middle Persian marvârid, and it appears in the earliest layers of classical New Persian literature. In everyday speech it is the standard, neutral word for a pearl in all contexts, from a jeweler’s description to a figure of speech. The phrase دانه مروارید (dâne-ye morvârid) means a single pearl bead, and مروارید دندان (morvârid-e dandân) is a poetic expression for pearl-white teeth. The word has no commonly used pure Persian synonym; Arabic-origin گوهر (gowhar) is sometimes used poetically to mean a precious gem in general but does not specifically denote a pearl in everyday use. مروارید also functions freely as a personal name for women in Iran and the broader Persian-speaking world.

Cultural note

Persian poets have used مروارید as an image of rare perfection for over a thousand years. In classical poetry, tears compared to مروارید signal grief so refined that it becomes beautiful; words of wisdom scattered like مروارید before unworthy listeners echo the sentiment of casting pearls before swine found in other traditions. The Persian Gulf (خلیج فارس, khalij-e fârs) was historically one of the world’s most important pearl fisheries, and the Iranian and Arab communities of its coastal ports built significant cultures around pearl diving before the discovery of oil ended the trade in the twentieth century. This history gives مروارید a geographic resonance in Iran beyond its role as a poetic image.
