مرداد (mordâd) is the peak of Persian summer, July 23 to August 22, paradoxically named for the Zoroastrian Yazata of immortality.
What it actually means
مرداد is the fifth month of the Iranian solar calendar, running July 23 to August 22. It is the hottest stretch of the Iranian year. The month is also tied to a heavy date in modern Iranian political memory: 28 مرداد 1332 (August 19, 1953) is the date of the CIA-MI6 coup that overthrew Prime Minister Mosaddegh, an event Iranians of every political stripe still mark. So when an Iranian says مرداد, the calendar sense is dominant in everyday speech, but the date 28 مرداد carries permanent political weight.

Where it comes from
مرداد is the modern Persian descendant of Avestan Ameretat, “immortality, deathlessness”. In Zoroastrian theology, Ameretat is one of the six Amesha Spentas and the Yazata of plants and immortality, paired with Haurvatat (the Yazata of خرداد). Together they represent the wholeness of body and the endless continuation of life. The original meaning is the opposite of what the word looks like in modern Persian, where مرگ (marg) means “death” and مرده (morde) means “dead”. The Avestan a-meretat had a negation prefix that got worn away in Middle Persian, so what survived into modern speech is the root that resembles death rather than the prefix that negated it. A linguist’s footnote, but a striking one: every Iranian who says مرداد is naming an immortality-spirit while pronouncing a word that looks like its opposite.
