What it means
کلاژ (kolâj) is the Persian form of the French word collage, which derives from the French verb coller, meaning to glue. It refers to the artistic technique of cutting and assembling pieces of paper, photographs, fabric, newspaper clippings, or other found materials onto a surface to create a new composition. The word entered Persian directly from French along with the artistic practice itself. In contemporary Persian, کلاژ is used both for the technique and for the finished artwork. A related term that sometimes overlaps is هنر ترکیبی (honar-e tarkibi), meaning mixed-media art, though کلاژ remains the standard specific term.

Cultural note
کلاژ as a technique became widely known in Iran through art education in the twentieth century, influenced by European modernist movements. It is now a standard part of primary and secondary school art curricula in Iran. Contemporary Iranian artists have used collage to combine traditional Persian visual motifs with modern materials, creating works that bridge classical and contemporary aesthetics. Digital collage, sometimes called کلاژ دیجیتال (kolâj-e dijitâl), has grown popular on Iranian social media platforms as a form of graphic expression.
