What it means
خلاصه (kholâse) is borrowed directly from Arabic خُلاصة (khulâsa), meaning “essence” or “summary.” In formal Persian it still means “summary” as a noun. In colloquial speech, however, it functions as an adverb meaning “in short,” “to cut a long story short,” or even “anyway” when the speaker wants to move past details. It is one of the most common conversational shortcuts in Tehran Farsi. When used as a discourse marker it often comes at the start of a sentence to signal that the speaker is wrapping up. A rough synonym is به طور خلاصه (be tore kholâse), though that form sounds formal and is almost never used in casual speech.
How to use it
- خلاصه اون قرارداد رو نگرفتیم. (Kholâse oon gharârdâd ro nagereftim.) “Anyway, we didn’t get that contract.”
- خلاصه کلام اینه که نیومد. (Kholâse kalâm ine ke nayumad.) “In short, he didn’t show up.”
- خلاصه کن، وقت نداریم. (Kholâse kon, vaqt nadârim.) “Summarize it, we don’t have time.”
- خلاصه یه چیز خوب بود. (Kholâse ye chiz khub bud.) “Bottom line, it was something good.”
Cultural note
خلاصه is so embedded in spoken Persian that many Iranians use it reflexively, the way English speakers say “so” or “basically” to signal they are getting to the point. It can also carry a resigned or impatient tone, similar to “long story short” or “whatever.” In formal contexts such as academic writing or news articles, خلاصه appears as a noun meaning “abstract” or “summary,” for example خلاصه مقاله (the article abstract). The dual life of this word, formal noun and colloquial filler, makes it essential vocabulary for any B1 learner.
