A2 — Elementary

What it means

کشو (kashu) means “drawer,” the sliding box you pull out of a desk, dresser, kitchen cabinet, or کمد. It is a pure Persian word tied to the verb کشیدن (to pull), which is exactly what you do to open one. Each pull-out compartment is a کشو, and a dresser is essentially a stack of them.

How to use it

  • کشو رو باز کن (kashu ro bâz kon) “open the drawer”
  • تو کشوی بالایی (tu kashu-ye bâlâyi) “in the top drawer”
  • کشو گیر کرده (kashu gir karde) “the drawer is stuck”
  • قاشق چنگالا تو کشوئه (qâshoq-changâl-â tu kashu-e) “the cutlery is in the drawer”

Cultural note

The کشو is where small household things live: documents, cutlery, odds and ends. The kitchen کشو for spoons and forks, and a hallway کشو for keys and bits, are familiar fixtures in any Iranian home.
