کباده

What it means

کباده (kabbadeh) is a heavy iron bow used in the زورخانه (zurkhane) for a specific strength ritual. The bow is never shot; the practice is to draw it back overhead, pass it from hand to hand, and rock it side to side in rhythm with the morshed’s drum. A standard kabbadeh weighs between ten and twenty five kilos and is hung with a chain of small metal disks that jingle as it moves.

The movement

Standing in the گود (gowd), the athlete grips the bow at both ends and lifts it overhead with the string facing forward. Then the bow is rocked from shoulder to shoulder in long, controlled arcs, the metal disks ringing like a tambourine on every pass. The exercise is mostly about isometric shoulder strength, posture, and steady breath; done well, it looks meditative. Senior pahlavans add small turns of the torso to each pass so the disks chime against each other at a precise interval, locking into the rhythm of the drum.

Where the word comes from

The origin is debated. کباده is a pure Persian word, and old sources tie it to کمان (kaman, bow) by way of an older training form where actual war bows were strung heavier and heavier to build draw strength. By the time the zurkhane took its modern shape, the bow had become a closed loop of iron whose only purpose was the ritual itself, an instrument that remembers a weapon.
